NORA Reauthorization Legislation Gains Co-Sponsors

The Campaign to reauthorize the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) is gaining strong traction in both houses of Congress, with 33 U.S. representatives and 13 U.S. Senators signing on as co-sponsors of new NORA legislation.
NORA is program established by Congress in 2000 to support the Oilheat industry and the consumers who rely on Oilheat for winter comfort. It provides research and development, consumer education and technical training for Oilheat professionals. NORA is funded by a charge of two-tenths of a cent ($.002) per gallon of heating oil that is destined for end use heating consumption in over 20 states.
NORA requires a charter from Congress to operate, and the law authorizing it expired on Feb. 6, 2010. Bipartisan legislation was introduced on May 11, 2011, as H.R.1756 in the House by Representatives Charlie Bass (R-NH), Peter Welch (D-VT), Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Leonard Lance (R-NJ). It was introduced in the Senate as S.949 by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Jack Reed (D-RI), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Richard Burr (R-NC).
In recent weeks, the following U.S. Representatives have signed on as co-sponsors of H.R.1756: Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY), Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ), Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ), Rep. With these additions, the sponsors now include 11 Republicans and 22 Democrats in the U.S. House and four Republicans, seven Democrats and two Independents in the U.S. Senate.
